1. The pharmacist must be licensed and in good standing with a State Board of Pharmacy as required by the practice environment.
2. The pharmacist must provide a high quality pharmacy practice.  The pharmacist must work at the site at least one year before students are assigned.  If the pharmacist is a recent residency graduate, he/she must work at the site at least six months before students are assigned.
3. The pharmacist must abide by the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Association’s and/or the American Pharmaceutical Association’s Code of Ethics.
4. The pharmacist must take sufficient time to organize the student’s pharmacy practice experience, spending one-on-one time with the student and assessing progress.
5. The pharmacist must engage in professional growth and life-long learning through participation in professional organizations and continuing education programs (e.g., provided by the Area Health Education Centers Program and state and national professional pharmacy organizations).
6. The pharmacist must provide learning experiences that stress the responsible provision of pharmaceutical care and the optimization of patient drug therapy outcomes.
7. The pharmacist will participate in a preceptor training program provided by the School and the AHECs within the first two years of entering the Professional Experience Program.
8. In selecting Preceptors, preference will be given to pharmacists who:

            a.    Have developed an innovative practice site.
            b.    Have one or more of the following available:
                    1)    frequent patient contact
                    2)    opportunities to interview patients
                    3)    evaluation and monitoring of patient drug therapies
                    4)    interaction with other health professionals
                    5)    access to complete medical record
                    6)    private counseling area
                    7)    access to internet for literature and health-related information searches
                    8)    disease-state counseling
                    9)    compounding extemporaneous formulations
                    10)    prescriptive authority
                    11)    opportunities for visitation to other health-related agencies, e.g., EMS, health department, hospice,
                             governmental agencies, managed care organizations
                    12)    pharmacotherapy/pharmaceutical care research
            c.    Participate in selected student seminars at the regional AHEC.

Evaluation of Preceptors

Preceptors and their practice sites will be evaluated by students, school and AHEC faculty.  The results of this evaluation will be communicated to the preceptor.
