Dr. Murray is Mescal S. Ferguson Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he serves as chair of the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy.
Dr. Murray’s research involves developing pharmacy services to improve drug therapy in older adults with chronic disorders, health care utilization of low-income minority people, and pharmacoepidemiology using large population computer databases. He received his baccalaureate and doctor of pharmacy degrees from Duquesne University and his MPH degree from Indiana University. He completed a residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia and a fellowship in pharmacoepidemiology at Regenstrief Institute, Indianapolis.
In 1996 Dr. Murray received the Award for Excellence in Health Science Research from the Indiana Public Health Foundation, in 1999 he was named a Purdue University Faculty Scholar, and in 2002 he was named Bucke Professor of Pharmacy. He has also served as director of Healthcare Data & Epidemiology and Senior Scientist at Regenstrief Institute.
His research has been funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the National Institutes of Health. He is an active member of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics and has served as a member of the board of directors and chair of the Committee on the Coordination of Scientific Sections. He is chair of the United States Pharmacopeia’s Expert Panel on Safe Medication Use, a member of the Executive Committee of the Council of Expert Panels, and past member of the expert panels on Therapeutic Decision Making and Medicare Model Guidelines. Dr. Murray is a former board member of the International Society of Pharmacoepidemiology, in 2003 he was named Fellow.
