The Professional Experience Program (PEP) is a system of practice experiences that models the delivery of pharmaceutical care. The program provides PharmD students a structured, supervised program to participate in the practice of pharmacy.

More than 500 pharmacy preceptors in 275 sites across North Carolina serve students through a network of Area Health Education Centers, giving pharmacy students a unique venue in which to practice their skills. In addition, more than 25 AHEC and community-based pharmacy faculty support the Professional Experience Program along with selected pharmacists who have been recognized by the School as preceptors.
North Carolina’s AHECs partner with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and other academic institutions to provide real-world experience for pharmacy students at pharmaceutical care centers across the state. The AHEC system gives students the opportunity to connect with communities and deepen their understanding of the unique challenges facing the health care profession while gaining hands-on experience critical for their transition from student to practitioner.
