ADDING SECTIONS: HIDING PARTS OF YOUR SITE

At this point, you might realize that you don’t want the public to see your site while you’re still working on it. To hide your site, you need to change its state to “Private”. To set an item to private:

  • Click on “Contents” in the second row of buttons at the top of the page (this button is only available when you’re viewing a folder. If you’re on a page, you need to navigate back to a folder and then hit “Contents”. This will give you a sitemap-like display of the items in the folder.
  • Click the checkbox next to the item you want to set to “Private”, then click the “change state” button below the list of items.

  • Scroll to the bottom of the page that comes up, and you’ll see a list of the states you can set your page to. When a page is set to “Private”, this list will contain a “Publish” option and a “Make visible” option. “Make visible” sets the state to “Public Draft.” For the page to be viewable to the public, you need to set it to either "Public Draft" or "Published".
  • Higher up on the page, there is a checkbox that says “Include folder items”. If you check this box, then whatever state you apply to the folder is automatically applied to all of that folder’s contents as well. The difference here is that if everything is set to “Private”, then the public can’t see any of it. If only the folder itself is set to Private, then even though somebody can’t navigate to its contents through the menu, they can still type in the direct URL for a page within the folder and view it. This could be a useful feature if you want somebody to look at a page you've created but don't want the public to see it. You can set just the folder to "Private" and send a link to the page within that folder to whoever you want to view it.

  • Once you choose the state you want and click “save” at the bottom, you’ll be taken back to the page view. Notice that in the upper right corner of the screen, the “state” field now says whatever state the page is in.
