George H. Cocolas, professor emeritus of the School of Pharmacy, has had a strong presence in pharmacy education for more than 40 years. Since joining the faculty at UNC in 1958, he has shaped the lives of students in 39 graduating classes.
Dr. Cocolas completed a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of North Carolina in 1956, and after a brief time in industry joined the UNC faculty in 1958. He served the School as assistant dean and as director of admissions for 30 years. Dr. Cocolas's work with AACP includes representing medicinal chemistry on the Executive Committee of the Conference of Teachers, and he was a member of the Resolutions Committee, the Program Committee of the Section of Teachers, the Committee to Evaluate the AACP Executive Director, the Research and Graduate Affairs Committee, and the Pharmacy College Admission Test Advisory Committee. At the end of December 2002, George stepped down as Editor of the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education after 22 years, the longest tenure in the history of the Journal.
