Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education

The Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education (PPEE) works to meet the growing needs of pharmacy practitioners and pharmacy students. The division acts as a centralized point of education and training where students hone their craft by working with and learning from pharmacist-mentors in laboratories and practice sites across North Carolina.

The division oversees the School's Professional Experience Program, the Pharmaceutical Care Laboratories, the Master of Science in Health-System Pharmacy (coming in fall 2008), and the postgraduate and continuing education programs to establish a much-needed direct link with pharmacy practitioners and practice sites throughout North Carolina.

The Pharmaceutical Care Labs provide students with early introduction to and ongoing opportunities to practice and refine a variety of skills and abilities needed to provide effective patient care. These courses emphasize process, rather than content, and are designed to help each student apply and integrate content from courses into a functional knowledge and skill base; develop intellectual, interpersonal, and technical skills related to professional practice; and to develop skills and strategies to facilitate lifelong learning and career development. Various teaching and learning methods are used throughout the 5-semester course series, both to enhance interest and to ensure adequate practice to master important concepts and skills.

The Professional Experience Program is responsible for implementing and coordinating the experiential education components of the curriculum including managing the student assignment process for both early and advanced pharmacy practice experiences; recruitment, development and assessment of experiential faculty (preceptors); establishment and maintenance of institutional affiliation agreements; budget monitoring and resource planning. In addition, program faculty coordinate a six-semester course sequence designed to prepare students for full participation in the experiential component of the curriculum.
