The Triangle and RTP

Chapel Hill forms one corner of the “Triangle” region of North Carolina, which includes the cities of Durham and Raleigh. The Triangle is consistently ranked as one of the best metropolitan areas in the nation for quality of life, cost of living, and career and academic opportunities.

The area is home to Research Triangle Park (RTP), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke
University and North Carolina State University. RTP, the largest research park in the United States, is a 7,000 acre community of more than 150 companies and organizations, including 132 that are dedicated to furthering the boundaries of research and development. This juxtaposition of academia and industry, and the interactions between them, has resulted in a unique environment known worldwide for excellence.

The School of Pharmacy’s unique ties to RTP creates a culture of collaboration that is unlike anywhere else in the United States. The School’s interactions with RTP-based organizations through clerkships and faculty collaborations give our students incredible opportunities to learn about cutting edge research. We are fortunate to have affiliations with prestigious research and pharmaceutical organizations such as GlaxoSmithKline, PPD, and Quintiles, as well as several new companies formed in collaboration with the School’s faculty. Our students and faculty not only participate in collaborative research efforts with these corporations, but the sites also serve as a training ground for PhD students and elective rotation sites for PharmD students.
