1950s

Ralph Ashworth (’55 BSPhar) and his wife, Daphne, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their pharmacy, Ashworth Drugs in Cary, in May. Ashworth also was recently honored by the Campbell University School of Pharmacy with the M. Keith Fearing Community Pharmacist Award and was named “Tar Heel of the Week” by the Raleigh News & Observer.

1960s

Hubert T. "Ted" Huggins Jr. (’62 BSPhar), a concert pianist, recently formed a duo piano team with Sandy Grant.

1970s

Steve Evans (’75 BSPhar) was recognized by the Ram’s Club as Board Member of the Year. The award recognizes board members for outstanding volunteer service to the Ram’s Club.

Joni I. Berry (’76 BSPhar,’79 MS, ’03 PharmD) was selected as a 2007 American Pharmacists Association Fellow. Fellows are members of either the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management or the APhA Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science with a minimum of ten years professional experience.

John Davie Waggett (’78 BSPhar) was named the 2007 Community Preceptor of the Year by the UNC School of Pharmacy. Waggett, who is the owner of Seashore Discount Drug and Winter Park Discount Drug in Wilmington, has served as a preceptor to more than twenty UNC School of Pharmacy students.

1980s

Joseph T. Hanlon (’81 MS, ’90 PharmD), professor of pharmacy and geriatric medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and VA Research Health Scientist (Pittsburgh VA CHERP and GRECC), is the 2007 recipient of the American Geriatrics Society’s Edward Henderson Award. The Henderson Award goes to an individual whose research and publications elucidate and help remediate the problems inherent in elder care. As a Henderson Award recipient, Hanlon delivered a “State-of-the-Art Lecture” in May during the American Geriatrics Society’s annual meeting.

Neal Fowler (’84 BSPhar) recently was profiled in The Scientist magazine (Volume 21, Issue 4). Fowler is the CEO of Centocor Inc.

Robin Davis (’88 BSPhar) was named to the KS Bank Advisory Board in Kenly. Davis, the owner of Kenly Drug & Pharmacy, is currently the president of the Johnston County Pharmaceutical Association and is a member of the North Carolina Association of Community Pharmacists.

1990s

Alicia Gilsenan (’92 BSPhar, ’95 MSPhar), the director of epidemiology at RTI Health Solutions, has been appointed as an adjunct assistant professor in the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy in the UNC School of Pharmacy. Gilsenan lives in Cary with her husband, Sean, and their two children, Allan Michael, 4, and Elaina, 2.

Phil Rodgers (’92 BSPhar, ’95 PharmD) has been appointed as the APhA representative to the National Diabetes Educational Program. He will serve on both the steering committee and the Pharmacy Podiatry, Optometry, and Dental Professionals (PPOD) work group.

Jay Campbell (’93 BSPhar) was the speaker at Wingate University’s commencement ceremony in May. Campbell is executive director of the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy.

Mollie Ashe Scott (’93 PharmD) was named Area Health Education Center Instructor of the Year by the UNC School of Pharmacy, an award that recognizes an outstanding faculty member who has had a positive impact on students’ advanced practice experience. Scott is the director of pharmacotherapy at the Mountain AHEC, which is based in Asheville. She affiliated with the School’s Professional Experience Program in 2001 and has served as a preceptor for sixteen UNC School of Pharmacy students.

Wyn Wheeler Sterling (’95 BSPhar, ’01 PharmD) was named the 2007 Hospital Preceptor of the Year by the UNC School of Pharmacy. Sterling, a clinical pharmacist at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, has served as a preceptor to more than fifteen UNC School of Pharmacy students.

Stacy Michelle Brown (’96 BSPhar) was married to Mark Robert Taylor of Apex.

Julie Mann (’96 BSPhar, ’97 PharmD) was married to Jeff Kindig on March 3, 2007.  They will reside in Durham.

LeAnne Harris Martinelli (’96 BSPhar) and her husband, Michael Martinelli, announce the birth of a son, Aiden Cole Martinelli, born April 21, 2006.

Shelly Bingham Batts (’97 BSPhar) and her husband, Charles Batts, of Charlotte, announce the birth of their daughter, Brinley Leanne Batts, born May 22, 2006.  She joins her sister, Ella.

Barry Bunting (’98 PharmD) received the 2007 American Pharmacists Association Clinical Research Paper Award for his paper, “The Asheville Project: Long-Term Clinical, Humanistic, and Economic Outcomes of a Community-Based Medication Therapy Management Program for Asthma.” Carole W. Cranor (’72 BSPhar, ’96 MS), PhD, was a co-author. Bunting also received the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management Merit Award, which recognizes pharmacy practitioners for significant contributions to pharmacy practice. Bunting is a clinical manager in the pharmacy department at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Amy Grace (Bigus) Beach (’99 PharmD) and her husband, Brian Beach, of St. James, New York, welcomed their son, Dylan Michael, on August 5, 2006.  Dr. Beach, formerly an assistant clinical professor at St. John’s University, is currently working as a senior regional medical scientist with GlaxoSmithKline Metabolic & Cardiovascular Research and Development, based in New York.

2000s

Angela Queen (’00 PharmD) and her husband, Bobby Queen, announce the birth of their daughter, Kendall Avery Queen, born April 1, 2007.

Rachel Turner (’00 PharmD) was married to Wisam Lazim on March 3, 2007. Rachel works as a clinical pharmacist at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, Tennessee.

Alison Lyke (’01 PharmD) received her MD in May from the UNC School of Medicine. Next year she will intern in internal medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Rebecca Tayloe Seegars (’01 PharmD) and her husband, Ben Seegars, announce the birth of their son, Benjamin Weston Seegars Jr., born March 9, 2006.

Jennifer Stegall-Zanation (’01 PharmD) received the PY3 Instructor of the Year Award from the UNC School of Pharmacy. Stegall-Zanation is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education.

Amanda Ball (’05 PharmD) accepted a position as a medicine ICU clinical pharmacy specialist at UPENN at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She completed her critical care residency in June at the University of Kentucky.

John Clark (’06 PharmD), a resident at Moose Professional Pharmacy through the School of Pharmacy’s Community Pharmacy Residency Program, received a $1,000 incentive grant from the American Pharmacists Association Foundation for his project, “Surveying Independent Pharmacies for Business Model Changes After the Implementation of Medicare Part D.” His preceptor, Joe Moose, and Stefanie Ferreri, director of the Community Pharmacy Residency Program, serve as co-investigators of the project.

Daniel Forrister (’06 PharmD), a resident at Kerr Drug in Raleigh through the School of Pharmacy’s Community Pharmacy Residency Program, received a $1,000 incentive grant from the American Pharmacists Association Foundation for his project, “The Community Pharmacist’s Role in Providing Pneumococcal Vaccinations: Assessing Patients’ Awareness and Willingness.” Co-investigators of the project include preceptors Lori Brown and Gretchen Jenkins (’02 PharmD) and Stefanie Ferreri, director of the Community Pharmacy Residency Program.

Angelynn Fox (’06 PharmD) is now a full-time pharmacist at Siler City Pharmacy.
