PAA Fall Reunion 2008

Wet weather didn't dampen the spirits of the more than 300 alumni, family members, and friends who attended the Pharmacy Alumni Association Fall Reunion at the University Bell Tower on Saturday, October 25. After a barbecue lunch provided by Allen & Son, attendees ventured to nearby Kenan Stadium to watch the Tar Heels dominate the Boston College Eagles 45-24. Members of the Class of 1983 celebrated their twenty-five-year reunion with a reception at the Carolina Club following the game.

More than 230 alumni and family members returned to the School of Pharmacy on October 13 for the 2007 PAA Fall Reunion. Tours of Kerr and Beard halls were provided by current pharmacy students, and a barbecue lunch was held on the lawn. Following lunch, attendees ventured to Kenan Stadium to watch the Tar Heels take on the South Carolina Gamecocks. South Carolina won by a 21-15 margin, but the Tar Heels rallied late in the game to make for an exciting, albeit disappointing, final quarter.

The PAA Board of Directors also met during the reunion festivities. Board members in attendance were Steve Buckley (’83 BSPhar, ’88 PharmD), Ken Phares (’91 MS, ’93 PhD), Jennifer Askew (’03 PharmD), George “Buck” Albright (’70 BSPhar), Tab Waldrop (’84 BSPhar), Steve Evans (’75 BSPhar), Steven McCombs (’74 BSPhar), George Brookins (’76 BSPhar), Jackie Harrell (’78 BSPhar), Ruth Higgins (’78 BSPhar), Mark Holshouser (’76 BSPhar, ’80 PhD), Al Munday (’80 BSPhar), and Andy Tennille (’67 BSPhar).

Russell Mumper, the John A. McNeill Distinguished Professor and director of the Center for Nanotechnology in Drug Delivery, spoke to the board about his research. The board received updates from PAA staff about the association’s financial activities, communications, pharmacy student outreach efforts, and events.

At the meeting, the board also unanimously passed amendments to the PAA Constitution and Bylaws. Changes included eliminating the 30-day bill collection period for membership dues, moving the effective date for new officers from October to July 1, and removing the district selection criteria from election and term replacements requirements. The board also voted to authorize the director of alumni affairs to plan the annual meeting in conjunction with the current board president, instead of forming a program committee to plan the meeting.
