Classes may not be in session but that certainly does not mean things are quiet at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

The School, along with our partner Mission Hospital in Asheville, received an AACP Crystal APPLE award, which recognizes the very best in experiential education offered by the nation’s pharmacy schools. This year’s award recognized the work of Elizabeth Michalets at Mission Hospital. Michalets is a 1991 graduate of the School and a clinical pharmacist practitioner. She teaches students in a one-month, advanced-pharmacy rotation where they learn to care for patients in the hospital’s Neurotrauma Intensive Care Unit.

I’d like to offer my special thanks to Kim Leadon and Bruce Canaday for all the work they put in to navigating the very extensive application process. The award will not be presented until AACP’s midyear meeting early next year.

I would like to welcome Vicky Burris to Beard Hall. She has moved from the Office of Advancement to serve as manager of the Community Pharmacy Residency and master’s programs in PPEE.

Krista Williams has moved from the dean’s office to the PPEE to serve as Steve Caiola’s administrative assistant.

Travis Womble is the new student services assistant in the Office of Student Services.

Student News

We received more than 800 applications for our PharmD program this year. The applicants ranged in age from nineteen to fifty-two and came from forty-eight states and seventy-one North Carolina counties. A little more than half of them were from out of state, and slightly more than two-thirds were women. Minorities made up at least 38 percent of the applicant pool (some applicants chose not to list their ethnic background).

Final numbers on admitted students will be available in a month or two.
